Ship History
Little of the vessel's early history is documented. In 1940, Dawn was owned by The London and Rochester Trading Company and was skippered by Mr. A. C. Mills. The vessel continued to operate as a charter barge until 1992, when a rebuild was initiated but subsequently abandoned.
Currently, Dawn is owned by the Dawn Sailing Barge Trust and is awaiting a complete rebuild. An application for funding has been submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund to support this effort.
As of September 24, 2010, the members and trustees announced that Dawn had been fully rebuilt and was operational. The vessel's home port is now West Mersea. Following a successful first season, Dawn underwent improvements and maintenance during the winter of 2010/11. The vessel aims to rejoin the Barge Match entrants in the following year and continue its charitable activities.
